Horror Movie Review: My Evil Dead – Part 4 or, Part 1, Again?

After my bitching, moaning and groaning at the announcement that my beloved Evil Dead was being remade, or “re-imagined”, it was finally released on April 5, 2013. I saw it two weeks later. It wasn’t because I was boycotting the film with hopes that my lack of attendance would cut into the film’s box-office receipts. Nor was it because the inner fan-boy in me refused to watch this predetermined abomination retelling of a classic film. No, it was simply because a window to shell out my hard-earned money didn’t present itself until two weeks after its release. Simple as that.

What is the difference between Paranormal Activity 4 and the other three films in the series? Close to nothing. However, Paranormal Activity 4 takes home the award for being the worse in the series. What’s new in Paranormal Activity 4? Absolutely nothing.

I would’ve loved to be at an understanding age when Orson Welles unleashed his masterpiece “The War of the Worlds” on the radio in 1938.  There’s that old and true saying when it comes to horror films, that less is more.  Honestly, the scariest thing you and I will ever see is whatever our imagination can design from scratch.  Seriously think about it for a second.  When we hear that something so god-awful is happening, our psyche goes into the darkest realms, and it pulls out an image that makes us lose our minds and makes us forget to breathe.  That’s why Welles’ radio show worked so well. That’s why it terrified radio listeners to the point of causing sheer mayhem.

Like any successful movie franchise, its novelty eventually wears off and audiences scurry off to the next best thing – at least for the most part (see Saw). When I initially saw the teaser for the latest installment in the Paranormal Activity series I scoffed and told myself that I probably won’t be spending my money on this film, especially after it seemed that the series was heading in a direction that didn’t interest me, specifically, the Bloody Mary angle. As is usually the case, curiosity peaked its tiny little head and bit me in the rear end prompting me towards the movie theater. Needless to say, I’m glad it did. For those wondering, my life is still in tact as the last 15 minutes did NOT mess up my life as promised in the television promos.

I’m reminded of a time in movies where the hero just knew what had to be done, plain and simple. None of this ‘Let me have my cake, blow away the bad guys, and eat it too’ philosophy.  Maybe it’s the cynical side of me, but movies of the past couple of decades have had that mentality, and almost all of them have the same thing in common: they’re not very good.  Face it, they’re fluff pieces, catered to those who thrive on happy, sappy endings. Kind of like the junk food of cinema. They’re good for the time being, but in the end it’s just forgettable.

Titanium Spork of the Gods!

Alas, the “Titatanium Spork of the Gods” has arrived! Never before have I been able to achieve feats that were once unattainable. For the first time I was able to eat with a spork and not have have it snap under the weight of my food; no more prongs breaking off only to join the mish-mash of mashed potatoes and being accidentally swallowed, stabbing at my esophagus as it careens toward my stomach. The invention of the spork is that of a genius – combining the spoon and the fork so that only one utensil goes into the dishwasher afterwards instead of two. Absolutely genius!

Ok, ok! The Titanium spork was a prize in a contest I won via Slices of Bizarro, the website of author Jeremy C. Shipp. Along with the spork came the e-book Aberrations. Aberrations features short stories from an array of writers edited by Jeremy that certainly makes for an interesting read.
