After Laura’s stint on MTV’s Fear, her world was turned upside down and the possibility of the paranormal existing became a reality for her. Of course, knowing Laura for a long time, I had to make fun of her for chickening out and not sticking it around until the very end where a hefty amount of money awaited her, at least in “I’m a student” terms.
“You had to be there,” she would respond. Yes, I was sure that it was scary and all, being in an old, rundown abandoned prison, but it was MTV! Surely, they were staging the whole thing! What I failed to realize was that Laura knew this all too well and was able to distinguish what was fabricated and what was real as explained in Part II.
Still, her experiences on Fear seemed to be a turning point for Laura and has left quite an impression on her as well as opened her mind to many possibilities. The notion of believing, to me, is simple. To see is to believe. But is it really that simple or is there a gray area?
For example, a magic trick. A magician can render an illusion of making a card disappear in front of your eyes. But, everyone who is rational, and in their right mind for that matter, knows that magic does not exist and the magician achieves this illusion through sleight of hand. Of course, I can see the card “disappear”, but I know that he has cleverly hidden it. If I wanted to, I can grab the magician’s hand and reveal how he is disguising the card. To do so would render me the jerk who ruined the trick! Still, it is something that I can prove. How can one prove the existence of a ghost? To date, you cannot.
Why then do so many people believe? Surely, not everyone has lost their minds… right? No, I don’t think so. For everyone, the experience will be different yet very similar in that the common denominator in their stories is that “something happened” to them…
Part III: Conclusion
We’ve all watched a horror movie and sat there screaming at the co-stars for thinking the main character was inventing this killer who gets them in their dreams. And we all know what happens to them in the movie…yep, they get the axe because they ‘didn’t believe’! Well, I choose to err on the side of caution and be the one who ‘believes’…(Not that real life is ever so exciting and dramatic as a horror movie.) Which brings me to my next point. Why can’t a spirit linger after death?
I have always hated rules and generally don’t follow them so my motto is “says who?” Who says, that this is impossible? Why, what makes it so? Absolutely nothing. We are all, in essence, one big ball of energy- our thoughts, our actions, our souls, our material makeup is all some form of energy. And when we depart this earth we continue to be a form of energy through our soul. I’m a firm believer, especially in cases of traumatic events, that spirits and energies can still linger and sometimes need help ‘moving on’.
Here’s another anecdote, about 4 years ago my grandmother passed away, rest her soul. We were on our way to the funeral and my grandfather was about to lock the door to the house when I suddenly remembered I had to go back inside. I didn’t want mosquitoes sneaking into any of the 3 bedrooms so I made sure to completely shut all 3 doors. I was the last one out, watched my grandfather lock the door and we all left together. A couple of hours later we return and again I am the first person back in the house. I stop midway in the hall, ALL THREE bedroom doors were fully open. There were no open windows or drafts, all the rooms faced in different directions, there were no maids or outside help, and I had personally closed each one. But here they were, wide open.
The proof is in the pudding, and it didn’t get any clearer than that. In this kind of situation though, I feel the soul probably lingers for a couple of days and then moves onward as opposed to continuously roaming around. There are many, many other things over the past 10 years since I was on the show that have made me a believer, from first hand accounts with Santeria and the like, to dreams, to stories my parents have now fessed up to, but I must stop somewhere. Suffice it to say though that just because you personally might not believe in something, does not mean that it isn’t..in fact..real.
Happy Hauntings… :-)
